Front three-quarter. Starlight Black, and the hood tach is a factory option on this car.
Pontiac GTO
The car that started the whole argument, in the year it got its best engine and its cleanest body.
Every figure we hold on this car.
John DeLorean's team put a big engine in an intermediate body in 1964 and invented a category by doing it. 1967 is the year the GTO got the 400 and lost the stacked headlamps, and to most eyes it is the best-looking of them all.
Ours is a black car with the automatic, which sounds like the boring specification and is not. The Turbo-Hydramatic in this thing shifts hard enough to move you in the seat, and black over parchment is the combination the brochure led with.
What it's like to drive
Long-legged and surprisingly civilised for what it is. The automatic makes it the easiest of the fast cars to drive in the city, and it is the one we recommend if you want the noise without the left leg.
The one thing that will surprise you
Drums all round, and this is a heavy car. Read the braking note on the terms page before you take it — that paragraph exists because of this car.
Take it somewhere worth going.
We keep five routes written up, with the distances, the surfaces and where to stop. The Woodward run is the obvious one. The lake road is the better one.
