The Three Skulls
The Three Skulls
Paul Cézanne, 1839–1906
Cézanne kept skulls in the studio the way other painters kept apples, and painted them the same way — as construction problems first and symbols second. Three domes on a table become architecture; death becomes geometry. Picasso and Braque were taking notes within five years.
