Mary Cassatt, 1844–1926
Cassatt built a career on the unsentimental observation of women's daily lives, and here the admiration flows in every direction at once. Detroit acquired it in 1908 — while Cassatt was alive and working — making it one of the earliest of her major pastels to enter any museum anywhere.
