Robert S. Duncanson, 1821–1872
Duncanson grew up partly in Michigan, taught himself by copying prints, and became the first African American painter with an international name — toasted in London and Glasgow while American law still permitted his enslavement in half the country. His still lifes were painted for Cincinnati and Detroit patrons as proof of pure skill: a pineapple, grapes and cherries on a marble ledge, every surface answering a different way to light.
