The Visitation
The Visitation
Rembrandt van Rijn, 1606–1669
Mary greets her cousin Elizabeth on a dark stair, and Rembrandt spends all his light on the embrace — the servants, the peacocks and the city behind fall away into brown shadow. It is a small panel about enormous news, painted the year Rembrandt's own life began to darken. The picture reads best exactly the way the galleries hang it: close, and slowly.
