The Jewish Cemetery
The Jewish Cemetery
Jacob van Ruisdael, c. 1629–1682
Real tombs from the Portuguese-Jewish cemetery at Ouderkerk, rearranged beneath an invented ruin, a broken tree and a breaking sky — with one rainbow. Goethe wrote an essay about this picture; Constable lectured on it. Nothing else in Dutch painting argues so openly that landscape can carry the weight of a sermon, and Detroit owns the larger and darker of the two versions in existence.
