Paris, 1887: too poor to hire models, van Gogh painted himself — here in a straw hat and a working man's smock, the strokes already vibrating. In 1922 Detroit bought it for $4,200, and became the first public museum in America to own a van Gogh at all. The purchase was controversial; the verdict of the century has not been.
