A wedged through-tenon holds a stretcher between two trestles. It has no glue in it, it can be knocked apart with a mallet to get through a doorway, and it has been the right answer since about 1400.
Dining. Two trestles, one stretcher, four wedges, no hardware at all.
Sits at the table, lives in a hall. The same joint at a third of the size.
Narrow, tall, against a wall. The stretcher rides low so it can be stepped over.
