A template does not automatically hurt local search rankings, and a custom build does not automatically improve them. For a Detroit business, the useful comparison is the finished website: can customers find the right service, can search engines access the page, and can your team keep its details accurate?
Check the finished page, not the platform label
Open a service page on a phone. Look for a clear description, the actual service area, useful prices or quoting information, and a working contact route. A well-configured template can provide these. A custom build can also miss them. Ask to see a comparable working page before choosing either approach.
Separate crawling from ranking
Check for accidental noindex rules, blocked resources, broken links and incorrect canonical URLs. Submit a sitemap containing the pages you want discovered. Google’s crawl-budget guidance is aimed primarily at large or rapidly changing sites; a small business should first investigate specific indexing problems instead of assuming unused theme code has consumed an allocation of ranking potential.
Measure performance before replacing the site
Use PageSpeed Insights and available field data to locate slow images, scripts or interactions. Test the contact form and navigation yourself. Good Core Web Vitals support a usable experience, but they do not guarantee a ranking. Remove an unnecessary plugin when it causes a measured problem; do not assume every plugin or page builder needs to go.
Make local pages worth opening
Describe work you actually offer in the places you genuinely serve. Add relevant project details, photos you may publish and operational information. Do not create a page for every nearby city by swapping place names. A single useful service-area page may answer the customer’s question more clearly.
Choose the amount of control you need
Custom development can make sense for a distinctive design, an unusual booking flow or a difficult integration. A maintained platform may be sufficient for straightforward content. Compare editing access, accessibility, performance, maintenance and total cost. Our industry guides show specific interface decisions you can inspect rather than a promise about rankings.
